Between February 28 and March 2, 2014, the Palace of Culture hosted the Thanatology Conference, where over the course of three days 23 speakers and 206 participants explored the concepts of death, dying, and grief, emphasizing the importance of preserving human dignity in end-of-life situations.
Thanatology Conference

The conference approached the topic of death from an interdisciplinary perspective. Doctors, psychologists, clergy, and artists jointly sought to answer how we can face death, dying, and grief with humanity. Following the opening session, lectures and parallel workshops examined the conceptual, clinical, cultural, and spiritual aspects of death, while providing participants with insights into hospice care, communication techniques, and key end-of-life decisions.
Throughout the three-day program, emphasis was placed on patient-centered thinking, supporting the bereaved, and exploring ethical dilemmas related to aggressive treatments, euthanasia, and palliative care. The conference’s parallel workshops offered opportunities for interactive learning, personal experience sharing, and the comparison of different professional perspectives. The program was enriched with artistic performances, reflections, and closing thoughts, providing a fitting conclusion to the multifaceted exploration of issues related to death.
